The old AC coupling way: Solar panels create DC power, and batteries store DC power. In older systems, you waste energy converting DC to AC (Alternating Current) and back again from AC to DC to charge battery. Then to discharge battery you have to convert DC to AC a third time. This has losses at every conversion.
